Failte go Sligeach! (Welcome to Sligo)
Where do we start - we live in a very beautiful county, in the northwest of Ireland. Let’s face it: it takes somewhere pretty special to be christened “the land of heart’s desire” by one of Ireland’s most beloved poets W.B Yeats. Perched on the Wild Atlantic Way, with the coast to the west and lush lakelands to the east, Sligo town is the gateway to every Irish experience you could desire. County Sligo is a place full of memorable experiences wrapped up in an unforgettable landscape. Captivating historical sites, the amazing Sligo Town, roaring waves and tranquil islands, there’s a lot you can pack into your visit.
Sligo is located in the northwest of Ireland, about forty miles from Enniskillen and the border with Northern Ireland, and 135 miles from Dublin. Once a major port city located at the mouth of the Garavogue River, the name Sligo means "Shelly River" in Gaelic. The city is the 12th largest city in Ireland and the 2nd largest in the West.
Nestled between majestic Benbulben mountain to the north, ancient Knocknarea mountain and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, beautiful Lough Gill to the east, and the rugged Ox Mountains to the south, Sligo is one of the most picturesque places in all of Ireland. It's rugged landscapes rival those of more known tourist destinations in Ireland, but unlike the more known destinations, in Sligo you can have the beauty without the crowds!
Sligo is more than just a pretty place. As one of the main cities of the West of Ireland, Sligo is host to a wide array of amenities. Sligo Tourism have a fantastic guide to the region - detailed below and on their website https://www.discoverireland.ie/sligo/things-to-do-in-sligo, with the top ten attractions been nominated as:
1.Mullaghmore Head
2.Streedagh Beach
3.Lissadell House
4.Sligo Food Trail
5.Coney Island
6.Sligo Abbey
7.Drumcliffe Church
8.Carrowkeel
9.Eagles Flying
10.Benbulben
It is rich in both natural beauty and resources. A very historical and widely acclaimed literary location, synonymous with the poet W.B. Yeats. If you just want to enjoy the natural beauty, there is plenty to offer from the mountain ranges of Knocknarea and Benbulben, to the beaches of Dunmoran, Strandhill, Rossses Point and Streedagh https://www.ireland.com/en-gb/destinations/county/sligo/sligo-town/.
If you are a keen golfer, well take your pick with three championship golf courses on your door step - Enniscrone, Strandhill and County Sligo Gold Club.
